Best Time to Book Domestic US Flights

by FarePockets Team1 min read

When to book domestic US flights: aim for 1 to 3 months ahead, avoid the last two weeks, and leave on a Tuesday, the cheapest day in our fare data.

Domestic US fares typically move most in the 1-3 months before departure. Booking too early or too late both tend to cost more than the sweet spot in the middle.

General guidance

  • Booking window: 1-3 months ahead for most domestic routes.
  • Cheapest days to fly: midweek departures are usually cheaper than weekends. In our own fare data, Tuesday departures ran about 4% below a route's typical fare and Sundays 42% above; see the cheapest day of the week to fly.
  • Avoid: booking within 2 weeks of departure unless necessary. Last-minute fares are usually the most expensive.

This is general guidance, not a guarantee for any specific route. Check the lowest recent fare on a route page or search your dates for current prices.
